From Vermont to Pennsylvania and now to Missouri, timeshare scammers have undoubtedly collected millions of dollars from timeshare owners who badly wanted to get rid of their precious timeshares.St. Louis Better Business Bureau warns timeshare owners about a bogus company that have been operating illegally at LaSalle Building 509 Live Street. It carries the name Property Experts Marketing which according to the Missouri Secretary of State is not registered as a company.
The victims thought that what they paid in thousands of dollars will not be recovered--just like Texas truck driver who paid PEM $6,300. The company told him of that they weren’t able to sell it. Another victim from Converse, Texas paid an upfront maintenance fee of $3,870 and “excess profits” tax under the Mexican government (the timeshare was located in Mexico) for $2,430. The latter victim was told that his money will be refunded right after his timeshare is sold. Still, these victims felt broke.
The fraud has been escalating around due to the increasing demand of timeshare owners who no longer want to have timeshares because of its costly maintenance fees, mortgage fees, etc. As technology becomes sophisticated, they too are getting sophisticated as well in order to deceive more people to submit to their offers.
Before this incident, Vermont consumers also shared the same sentiments to those companies who have tricked timeshare owners of some special offers. Vermont’s attorney general have filed and won the case against Apex Professionals, a Nevada-based company, which violated the state’s consumer laws as well as fool them on offers of transfer of ownership with corresponding upfront payments. Pennsylvania’s attorney general charged BlueGreen Corp., a Florida-based company, for issuing coupons and vouchers that were sold at unreasonable prizes.
Though the three stories weren’t so similar, the point here is that timeshare consumers have increasingly been a victim of these big time scams.
This is an advice to all timeshare owners: even though you are so desperate enough to get rid of your timeshare, do not easily succumb to any too good to be true offers. Do a research about their companies to avoid being fooled. Report complaints immediately so as not to delay the harm and to immediately recover what you have loss if possible.
